Romanesque churches of Ponte de Lima
Santo Abdão (in Correlhã), Espírito Santo (in Moreira) and Santa Eulália (in Refoios)

Ponte de Lima 41º 46’ 7,7” N | 8º 35’ 3,4” W
Ponte de Lima

There are several traces of the Romanesque style in the municipality of Ponte de Lima, especially in religious architecture, with particular relevance for the 3 examples here presented, as, despite their simplicity, they are the most representative of this style. These churches require a more attentive look at all the details that can be appreciated and that characterize very well what can be already defined as the second phase of the Romanesque focus in this region, already in transition to the Gothic style.

Due to its location, context and decorative language, the Chapel of Espírito Santo is the one where these characteristics can be best observed. Both the churches of Santo Abdão and Santa Eulália are, due to their location, not ideal to observe the style in its best presentation. Whereas Santo Abdão is located near a road and next to the parish church of Correlhã (also with Romanesque foundation), Santa Eulália (once also the parish church of Refoios) is surrounded by a walled structure that doesn’t allow the full appreciation of the Romanesque style and, at the same time, bears witness to the appropriation of forms and traditional themes, namely by adopting the squared presbytery; using an engraving technique with bevel; using traditional themes of the tympanum and by reducing the size of the capitals, decorated with vegetable inspired themes.
