Ponte de Lima

The buildings formed by the religious heritage in the town centre and the area immediately after crossing the Roman and Medieval bridge (also known as "beyond the bridge" – "além da ponte”, as we call it), is worth an attentive walk. This assemblage is composed by several religious buildings, starting with the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia, at the end of Avenida dos Plátanos, passing through the set of churches of Santo António dos Frades and the Ordem Terceira, that constitute the Museu dos Terceiros (the religious art museum), continuing on to the main church, passing by the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Penha de França, with its beautiful baroque altar.

Opposite the main church there is the Church of Misericórdia, with a magnificent pulpit in gilded woodcarving and an altar front worthy of great prominence, symbolising the miracle of feeding the multitude.

A small detour takes us to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Lapa and from here to the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia das Pereiras, from where one can enjoy a unique view of the town and the Lima river. After the requisite visit to the chapel of São João, one should cross the bridge to admire the chapel of the Anjo da Guarda ("guardian angel"), a national monument, and the church of Santo António da Torre Velha.
