Palazzo “Villa Moraes” (Ponte de Lima) and the House and Estate of Bom Gosto (Seara)

Ponte de Lima 41º 46’ 7,7” N | 8º 35’ 3,4” W
Ponte de Lima

The architecture of the so-called "Brazilians of return-travel" ("Brasileiros de Torna-viagem” - Portuguese that immigrated to Brazil and returned years later), has some fine examples of its expression in the municipality of Ponte de Lima. We decided to highlight two of these that, due to their characteristics, are a great starting point to discover the others, also interesting and relevant.

At the time they were built (end of the 19th century), these Palazzi, especially the "Casa do Bom Gosto", stood out for not fitting the patterns of civil architecture at the time, but nowadays one could consider they created their own style, that should be studied and appreciated. Proof of this is the gate of the aforementioned palazzo, which could be described as "a very interesting example of a certain taste, in Neo-baroque style, that a "Brazilian of return-travel” ordered to be built in 1891. Whether one likes it or not, it stands as a relevant document, more of sociological, rather than artistic value, to a certain moment in the history of Portuguese art".

Villa Moraes, in Ponte de Lima, is home to the offices of CIM – Comunidade Intermunicipal do Alto Minho (Intermunicipal Community of Northern Minho) and a building that can be used for various events, such as seminars, conferences and training seminars. This palazzo is described in the heritage inventories as follows: "Revivalist residential architecture. Wide, recreational estate, with an irregular L-form plan, located on a slight slope, with a manor (at one of the ends of the estate), surrounded by an English garden that includes a man-made grotto, greenhouses, a castle-belvedere, an artificial lake crossed by wooden or stone bridges. Also the manor is in L-form, being composed by two bodies of different construction ages, the original being a rectangular body in a simple design, of Neo-classical inspiration and French influence".
