Largo de Camões 4990-048 Ponte de Lima

This section of the Valley, in Ponte de Lima, establishes the connection between the village and Vitorino das Donas pier. We began the section on the left bank, near the Roman-Goth Bridge, not far from the living room of Ponte de Lima, Camões Square. The bridge, which has connected the two shores for more than 2,000 years, is classified as a national monument. A unique work of the Roman Emperor of the time, Octavian Caesar Augustus, it would be augmented in the Middle Ages due to the diverging of the river bed as well as destruction caused by time or war.

Carry on the same section bypassing tohe April 25 stroll, as well as the tower of St. Paul and the Old Jail Tower. The first tower is a result of the remains of a tower erected in the XIV century, which included the structure of a village defense wall. In front is the resulting pillory, a restoration of most of the original elements that in 1999 allowed for a most accurate reconstruction and close to its original location. The second, as the name suggests, was used as a prison until the 60’s of the past century. Currently, it hosts the Interactive Tourism Shop.

We continue and enter the magnificent Platan Trees Avenue that ends at the chapel of Our Lady of Guidance, a XVII century temple. Midway through the avenue, we glimpse the Terceiro’s Museum, which holds a valuable and admirable collection of sacred art.

We pass under the bridge, leaving behind a rich and diversified historical and cultural heritage, heading to the plains of Correlhã, Seara and Vitorino das Donas. Along the way we will pass over the Trovela River, an effluent of the Lima River. In the valleys – a designation given to fertile land and plains that are located in the area adjacent to the banks of watercourses - agriculture is the main human activity. In this landscape, typical of the Lima River, corn, which prevails in the spring and summer, alternates with fodder crops/ hay in the fall and winter. The presence of farmers is common throughout the various seasons in the implementation of numerous and varied cultural practices that are necessary in view of the exploited cultures. This activity is responsible for the liveliness, but above all a very dynamic space, which makes it attractive for numerous wildlife species as a place of feeding.

About 1km after Vitorino das Donas’ pier, a  privileged space to rest in the company of the Lima River, the eco trail continues along the lands of Viana do Castelo County."
